Grant's Belated entry tag:travellerspoint.com,2007-06-09:/blog/?domain=grant-alan&thisblog_entryid=12&entryid=65353 2007-06-09T10:56:58Z 2007-06-09T10:32:11Z Hello everyone! Yes I have been slack, too busy doing not too much at all. OK so last time you heard from me I left Koh Phangan, on my way to Krabi. I met a couple of girls on the boat who were going there as well, and then I arrived at a bus saying it was going to Krabi, got whisked off to a travel agency, said goodbye to my Coral friends, then went to another travel agency and back ... Hello everyone!
Yes I have been slack, too busy doing not too much at all.

OK so last time you heard from me I left Koh Phangan, on my way to Krabi. I met a couple of girls on the boat who were going there as well, and then I arrived at a bus saying it was going to Krabi, got whisked off to a travel agency, said goodbye to my Coral friends, then went to another travel agency and back to jump on the bus just as it was leaving. Gotta love Thai organisation! So I was standing most of the 3 hour journey.

Next day Michelle and Miranda (M&M tehehe) told me I should go kayaking with them, so I did. Twas fun to get out into the sun again. Unfortunately I forgot to put in extra batteries and I'm still waiting on Michelle to send me photos...
So after that adventure we decided to go to this place called Railay Beach. You can only get there by boat so it pretty much feels like an island. We got there just before dark, and found a place to sleep and a place to watch the FA Cup final.

The plan for the next day was to take a boat trip out to the islands. Did a bit of snorkelling, saw some cool fish including a Nemo fish!!!!
They were pretty nice, I think Dad will want to go sailing around them... See they are pretty awesome...

Just a typical Thai Island

That night I got to eat crab, finally! And I made a mess of it but I didn't care. Had a fun night out with some new friends from our boat trip and random Thai guys that worked at the bar or played in the band. One of them had a hilariously high pitched laugh that cracked Dana (the new Canadian) and I up all night.

Eating Crab

Next morning I went back to Krabi for the day, siad goodbye to Michelle who went back to London. Then had a quiet night before setting off for Malaysia. Managed to spend a massive total of about $4 on food all day!

So on the minivan to go to Penang in Malaysia. Met a loud Australian guy (I'm wondering if there are any quiet ones) who was going all the way down with me. Miranda got off at Hat Yai so said goodbye to her. And yes, Hat Yai is where the bomb went off a few days later, it's OK I'm still alive. Penang was just an overnight stop, had some awesome Indian food and had an early night as the next day I was off to Cameron Highlands.

So I took most of the day getting there, finally got there and it was cool, as in temperature cool, a great change to stinking hot. Was only there for 2 nights as I wanted to get to Singapore a day early to catch up with people. So spent that day wandering around the little town, not much there. Ate more Indian food, so much food I couldn't eat it all and felt sick afterwards. It's much different travelling alone, I tend to drink a lot less!
The 2nd day involved a lot of walking. Set off at 9AM to see a waterfall, it was OK. Then went to see another waterfall which sucked, and a lookout point. That was a pretty short walk, so I set off out to a Tea Plantation around 4-5 kms out of town. Was a really nice walk, had a cuppa tea, then walked back. Was gonna walk up a peak but I couldn't make out the track very well, some dogs were barking in a very strange way and some dark clouds were coming over. So I set back to go to town and chilled out for the day and watched DVDs all night.

So off to Singapore the next day, was told I'd be leaving at 10 and arriving at 6PM. I went to get some breakfast at 8:45 to be told that I'm now leaving at 9:15. So I rushed to the bus stop, and spent all day on the bus finally arriving at 8:30PM. Grant was a very unhappy chappy! So I got hold of my friend Angeline, had a few wines and a fair few beers and was out until 4AM... It made the day a bit better!

Next day was stinking hot, walked around for an age trying to find a cheap place to stay. Gave up and stayed at a decent hotel near where I used to live. Waited for Alan to arrive, caught up with his gossip then organised our night off. It started with catching up with our friend Betty at a Hawkers Stall for dinner, a few drinks, then to my favourite bar to wait for people to turn up. The bar has changed, so we met people elsewhere and had another large night.

So Sunday was a write off... Monday was shopping day, Grant bought some shoes and a few presents. Went into his old work to get a reference. Tuesday we went to the zoo, and it pissed down with rain for about 90 minutes so we took a lot longer there than planned. Then Alan left. And I wandered around for a few hours.

So to keep you up to date. I arrived in London, had 4 recruitment agency interviews, went up to Cambridge, had 3 more. Saturday I went out with my friend Alex to Pacha which is a big nightclub and that was fun. Had a job interview on Monday, started the job on Wednesday. Go me!

Alright I've said enough. Everyone email me and tell me what you're up to cos I haven't heard from most of you.

Bangkok, Again... tag:travellerspoint.com,2007-05-27:/blog/?domain=grant-alan&thisblog_entryid=11&entryid=63117 2007-05-29T08:36:06Z 2007-05-27T08:28:25Z Ok, so, Ummm, back to Bangkok again... So to bring you upto date I was a smart boy and Lost my Passport, you know the thing you NEVER lose, so I had to go back to Bangkok to go to the New Zealand Embassy to get a new one, and to get it all started ASAP I decided I'd go the quick but expensive way and go by Plane from Koh Samui to Bangkok on Friday the 18th. So the night before ... Ok, so, Ummm, back to Bangkok again...

So the night before I'd decided to have a quiet night, funnily enough that didn't happen as I had to say goodbye to all our Coral friends and what better way to do it but with a few Beers/Buckets, and well one bucket lead to another. So after 3 hours sleep I actually woke upto my Alarm at 8:30am to get ready for my boat trip to Koh Samui at 9:30. Aftee the Boat trip I got to the airport on Samui and Booked a flight for Midday, but at just before checking in over the Load speaker they say the Flight has been cancelled due to technical problems, so I rush to the ticketing office and get my ticket changed for the 1:40pm flight (next non-full flight). I arrive in Bagkok at 2:45pm and get my bags, jump in a taxi and explain where I want to go, after almost 2 hours in the taxi I get to the NZ Embassy at 4:40pm, yes they closed at 4:30, what a day, and yes all on 3 hours sleep, I couldn't even sleep on the plane, so now I have to wait till monday.

After getting in a Taxi and heading for Khao San Road I booked myself into the same Place Grant and I stayed in last time, and got a Much needed Beer or 5, there we go I feel much better now!!!

Atleast I knew a few of the Coral friends were going to be In Bangkok shortly so I wouldn't have to spend my time on Khao San Road alone, never alone on Khao San!!!

So on Monday I get to the Embassy to sort out my Passport, and get told the quickest way is to get and ETD, Emergency Travel Document, which is basically the same as a Passport but only valid for 12 months. I get given a form to fill out and hand in with a couple Passport Photo's and a BIG bundle of cash, then get told I should be able to pick up my ETD tomorrow afternoon. I'm actually starting to feel fine about it all now, next day and I'll be able to catch back up with Grant.
That night I caught up with a few of the Coral guys and we decided to have a few drinks, as you do.

P5210224.jpg
Alan and a Nasty, but ohh so Tasty Bucket.

P5210228.jpg
Alan with a few of our Coral friends on Khao San Road

So after the night before I got up a little later then I'd wanted to, but as it turned out I couldn't pick up my ETD anyway, they had only given me one valid for 3 months. Which was useless as I needed atleast 6 months validity to get into Singapore, So to cut a long story short I had to wait another day, to get it, then another day to get it sorted through Thailand Immigration, so Thursday comes around and I can travel again, yes I was pretty stressed by then!!!

So I spent the next couple days just relaxing/shopping, yes you read it a Male relaxing and shopping at same the time, obviously no Females with him, and got a flight down to Singapore yesterday (26th) to catch back up with Grant.

As they say better to learn from others mistakes then make them yourself, so I hope this taught you all a good lesson...

Alan

Thailand!!! tag:travellerspoint.com,2007-05-18:/blog/?domain=grant-alan&thisblog_entryid=9&entryid=61624 2007-05-22T13:06:34Z 2007-05-19T04:07:03Z Ok so we arrived in the backpackers haven in Bangkok called Khao San road in the pouring rain at about 6 am which sucked as nothing was open. But after ... Ok so we arrived in the backpackers haven in Bangkok called Khao San road in the pouring rain at about 6 am which sucked as nothing was open. So by about 9 am we had a place to stay and full stomachs so we had a nap. We were pretty tired so went out to sort out our suits, and have a wee shop (I had to replace my ipod that I lost in Hanoi). But after that we were just too tired, and took a boat along the river back to Khao San Rd. Not much else happened that day.

By the 2nd day we were just sick of the noise of Khao San Road, so we just chilled out all morning until we checked out and went to see Grand Palace, but we missed out on seeing it by 10 minutes as the King had some Coronation thing that day, so we went to Wat Pho and Alan was pretty amazed by the temple complex. Grant was bored as he had seen it before. Then we just had to kill time before our bus and pack our new suits away. Now Grant looks like he has way too much luggage for a backpacker....

So we arrived in Koh Pha Ngan after a very long bus and boat journey, we decided to stay on the area away from all of the partying which was great. We went snorkelling, sat and read books, ate, had naps, and that was about it for 2 days. Brilliant!

Then it was off to Ko Tao, the boat ride was about 90 minutes which was just long enough to get a bit of an addition to the tan! We arrived there and sorted out our open water dive course, and we got free accommodation if we do the course. Diving is one of the coolest things we've done, and the water is pretty warm which made it pretty easy. Not getting eaten by a shark or attacked by a trigger fish made it much better!

DSCF0761.jpg

DSCF0762.jpg
Grant in Diving Gear

Ko Tao was a pretty cool town, very much set up for tourism. Plenty of bars on the beach and parties. On the 1st night we went to Thai Kickboxing with 7 fights. Saw a couple fo guys get knocked out by elbows to the temple. It's pretty crazy and I wouldn't go near it!

Next was Koh Phangan... party central! We stayed there for 7 nights and partied a lot as we picked Coral Resort which had a bunch of crazy (but cool) people staying there. The first few nights were just about meeting new people that were staying there. We've made friends from all sides of the globe and partied with them all. There was basically a party on the beach every night that went to about 5am, and there were always people keen to head out all night.

On the 15th there was a pool party at the resort, we both agreed it was one of the best parties we have ever been to. It started off with drunken Jack from Holland putting on a performance that only he could, swinging from table to table and shouting whatever came to his head... Then it was time to get in the pool before it became horribly polluted, then everyone started arriving from over the island so we went and partied. Great fun!

The next night was the Black Moon Party, Alan wasn't too keen after the pool party, but Grant went... It was actually pretty lame, really psychadelic trance with everyone seemlingly off their heads on drugs and not in any mood to be social. Not my idea of a good time at all!

The last night was a really fun night out, our group of new found friends just hanging out at Coral all night as most of us were leaving the next day. Grant had fun throwing ice whenever Richard and Mel started sucking face as we were sick of them doing it all day!
DSCF0768.jpg
Grant and some of our Coral Friends

Then for other reasons which Alan will specify in his blogs, we had to split ways... Alan back to Bangkok, and Grant to Krabi. We will update you on these antics later

Laos - The 2nd half tag:travellerspoint.com,2007-05-01:/blog/?domain=grant-alan&thisblog_entryid=8&entryid=58511 2007-05-19T03:40:26Z 2007-05-02T05:04:41Z Ok so now I'm on a decent keyboard I'll keep you up to date on what we got up to in the 2nd half of our Laos Soiree... So we left Vang Vieng for Louang Prabang, we were told not to take the bus so we got a minivan, except they put too many of us in the 1st one, and only 3 people in the 2nd one. Luckily half way we got in the 2nd one so it was ... Ok so now I'm on a decent keyboard I'll keep you up to date on what we got up to in the 2nd half of our Laos Soiree...

So we left Vang Vieng for Louang Prabang, we were told not to take the bus so we got a minivan, except they put too many of us in the 1st one, and only 3 people in the 2nd one. Luckily half way we got in the 2nd one so it was much more comfortable! All was going well until the storm arrived, We even got hail the size of golf balls!!! It was pretty cool, although the Irish girl we were with got a bit scared...

But we arrived in Louang Prabang, they have an excellent night market so we checked that out for a while. We had an early night, about time for Alan! The next day we looked around the old city, it's a world heritage site as it has so many buddhist temples mixed with old building with french architecture. It's quite a peaceful town and it was nice to walk around. We had a look in the museum of the royal family then walked up a big hill in the middle of the town to get a good view, it wasn't that great though, too many trees in the way. We had a late night at the bowling alley (it's the latest place for all the cool kids to hang out) that night after meeting a few people at the pub.
The next day we went out to a waterfall, it was quite beautiful, and peaceful as well. We had a swim, but it was pretty darn cold! We got back to town and just chilled out for a while, Grant had a really bad lunch so wasn't feeling the best. Never get buffalo stew!

So next it was up to Luang Namtha, it took us 9 hours to get there, it's only 300 kms away but the road is pretty attrocious at points. It was better than the 11 hours on the local bus anyway!

We got to Luang Namtha and organised our trek for the next day. And that night at the restaurant at our guest house we met a few people keen to do the same one, which made the next few days so much fun!

So up in the morning to do our trek, there were 7 of us (2 Poms, a German couple, and the obligatory Aussie). We did about 4 hours trekking the 1st day, then we arrived at a village and had a good rest and a swim in the river and a walk around the village.
DSCF0747.jpg
The trekking crew by the river
DSCF0741.jpg
The buffalo that was lazing by our hut

That night we had the most amazing dinner. We all get to eat with our hands which we both loved, and the food is all organic and so tasty! We had the chief of the village join us and we got to ask questions about the village which just made our lives seem so ridiculously and unnecessarily complicated. He was really nice and seemed to enjoy having the tourists visit. Oh and best of all, he's the chief by a vote! A mini democratic society!
We went off to bed early that night, not much to do with no electricity and just candles for company.

Up early in the morning, we had breakfast and started on our merry way at around 9:15. Today was the tough day as there were loads of leeches and the guide almost stepped on a few snakes... Alan was right behind him and was given quite the fright when Ket the guide jumped a few feet in the air! Leeches were just a nuisance, although we didn't get any on our skin, just socks and shoes.
We stopped at another village, was still quite nice, had another great lunch eating with our hands, had a rest and on up a steep hill we went. At the top of the hill we were all very sweaty but we walked along a bit and got views like these above the bamboo trees.
DSCF0754.jpg

So we had a pretty good day, were shattered when we got back but shouted our guides a beerlao for being so awesome, they thought we were pretty awesome too! And beer kept flowing until around 10 when we all went to bed as most of us were up early in the morning for buses.

Ahhh Public buses in Laos... We got to the bus station at 8, the bus left at 9:30 when it was full (which includes sacks of rice on the floor) and 5 hours later we arrived at the Thai border. The Border is on the Mekong river so we had to cross that to get to Thailand. We got to the other side to find that we had a 2 1/2 hour wait for the minibus to take us to Chiang Mai, so we ate and drank and had a laugh with the lady at the restaurant who admitted that she loved money and wanted us to spent as much as we could there. And we finally arrived in Chiang Mai at 11PM. Quite a long day! So we wandered around the night market which is open until 1AM. But we were in bed at midnight...

So now you're all up to date. Next stop Bangkok, and then to the islands in the sun! Can't wait!

And now for Laos tag:travellerspoint.com,2007-04-28:/blog/?domain=grant-alan&thisblog_entryid=6&entryid=57768 2007-05-02T04:14:32Z 2007-04-28T10:58:48Z So after all the buses and trains we'd taken we were both kinda looking forward to the Flight from Hanoi to Vientiane, and after the 1 hour flight we arrive in Laos, by far the shortest trip we've taken yet. So after getting our Visa's sorted at the airport, we jumped in a taxi and went to our Guest House, and then set off to explore The Capital of Laos... So after all the buses and trains we'd taken we were both kinda looking forward to the Flight from Hanoi to Vientiane, and after the 1 hour flight we arrive in Laos, by far the shortest trip we've taken yet. So after getting our Visa's sorted at the airport, we jumped in a taxi and went to our Guest House, and then set off to explore The Capital of Laos...

Our first impression of Laos is that it is Soo much more laid back and quiet then Vietnam, which we weren't complaining about. We spent the Morning and early Afternoon looking at the Wat's (Temples) once again we both got a bit Templed out, and we'd seen a sign taped to a Number of Power poles advertising Super 14 Rugby (Cane's vs Crusader's) at one of the Bar's, so we thought well, no better way to spend warm afternoon. When we got there though the Bar was full, there was a Book Group thingy going on inside, atleast we still got to have a couple beers and watch the second half. After the game we booked our bus tickets to Vang Vieng for the next day, killed a few hours then went had a Nice candle lit dinner by the river, Crickets aren't half bad to eat!!!

To Vang Vieang we go...

We get on the bus in the middle of town and off we go, to the bus station to pick up more people, then the bring on a couple Plastic chairs to put in the aisle for the people they'd over booked for (only 3) and away we go again. About 10 minutes into the trip they turn off the aircon, so everyone opens up the windows, 5 minutes from Vang Vieng they turn the Aircon on again, not that Alan would know he slept pretty much the whole way. So we get to Vang Vieng after a 4 hour bus ride, find a Guest House, and go get lunch then go wandering...
Not many people here at all, then between 4:30 and 6:30 the town just fills up from Nowhere. We'd booked a little Kayak/Cave/Tubing trip thingy for the next day.

So next day off we go for our little trip, after a little walk we get to a water cave and get handed a Tube and Headlamp the water was great and the cave looked cool so in we go with our guide. After a little way in we have to walk for abit, well Alan almost had to crawl, then back into the tube. After the tubing came lunch. After lunch we were off Kayaking, and all of a sudden we realised where everyone came from the night before, The River, Lots of people tubing don the river.
After about 30-40 minutes of kayaking we got out at one of the Bar's/river swings for a look and a swing.

And Yes Even Alan Did it, Grant was first though.
DSCF0727.jpg
Alan the swinger
DSCF0728.jpg
And Grant the swinger

After a short break there we were off again in our kayaks, the kayaking was over in another hour or so, ohh and it was a twin Kayak so both of us were in the same Kayak so obviously we got beached a coupe times, but there weren't really any decent Rapids to speak of the Kayaking got a little boring. We got back to town at about 2pm. We spent the next few hours sat in one of the TV bar there and watched 4 Movies one after the other with a few beers to wash them down.

So after watching everyone go down the river on tubes we decided it was out turn... So we had a day in the sun, doing a few swings and eventually meeting up with a few Poms, Canadians, and the obligatory Aussie who became our Vang Vieng friends. So we stopped at a fair few of the bars, and left the last one just a little too late and everyone got separated as it got dark. Grant being his incredibly smart self didn't have his jandals as Alan had the bag, cut his foot on a bamboo bridge and ran home to clean it out. Alan got back about 30 minutes later, Grant must be a better swimmer!

That night ending up being quite large, as our Vang Vieng friends enjoyed drinking... So we got home late after a very amusing night of laughing at the Poms as they were the drunkest!

So the next day we did it all over again, but this time we got out early so it wouldn't be dark and got a Tuktuk to town. Then we met up with our friends again, had a few beers, but Grant being a big girls blouse went to bed early. Alan kicked on until the early hours of the morning... Who knows what he got up to!!!!

We were up early to get the bus to Louang Prabang. We will update you all on this in our next post as this one is far too long already and these keyboards suck ass.

Hue to Hanoi to Sapa to Hanoi tag:travellerspoint.com,2007-04-19:/blog/?domain=grant-alan&thisblog_entryid=5&entryid=55963 2007-04-21T15:36:45Z 2007-04-19T10:36:01Z So Grant did end up pulling a sicky, he is a sooky little girl after all. So Alan went out on a moto for the day, he saw the countryside and some other cool old stuff about how the Vietnamese used to farm and where elephants fought tigers to amuse the emporers. So Grant did end up pulling a sicky, he is a sooky little girl after all. So Alan went out on a moto for the day, he saw the countryside and some other cool old stuff about how the Vietnamese used to farm and where elephants fought tigers to amuse the emporers.

That night we took the night train to Hanoi, another awful road! We slept a little between the sudden jolts of a random judder bar in the middle of the road for no apparent reason. So we got to Hanoi, and were told that more than a day in Hanoi was a waste, that we should spend 3 days in Sapa and then come back and fly to Laos, "sounds like a plan" we said. Just meant we had to kill a day in Hanoi. We waited in line for 90 minutes to see the embalmed body of President Ho Chi Minh, not worth it, but a good time killer. Then went to see a Pagoda, that was cool, it had a big ass drum which we really wanted to whack to see how loud it was. Then we went to KOTO restaurant, which is like Jamie Oliver's kitchen for underprivileged kids, except they're all Vietnamese and actually have no hope and not out of choice. Good food. Then sat by the lake, and walked around a bit, then ate dinner (Grant had roast pigeon, not much meat but tasty) and off to Sapa on the train we went.

So Sapa was pretty cool, it's 1650 metres high, and looks over this enormous valley. Photos don't show you the enormity of it, so we won't put one on. We got there and went for a wee wander of about 10-12 kms down into the valley about 600 metres down, with lots of hilltribes trying to sell us their handiwork, with our giude Tao and a couple of German guys. Apparently we were quicker than most others so were all done by 2:30. So we went down to the river and Alan had a swim, and we watched a couple of buffalo fighting. Then we went to a bar in the local hilltribe village. Alan shot a crossbow (he was pretty good, maybe he'll get on the SWAT team in the police force) and then watched the owner of the place whack the shit out of his monkey (it was an actual monkey, no metaphor there you dirty people!) which was pretty cruel. Then we went and drank beer up at the homestay and had a few rice wines, well Alan had a few (stuck to the Beers), Grant had about 10-15. So it was a good night.
DSCF0716.jpg
Mot, Hai, Ba... Zo!!! (One Two Three... Drink!!!)

Woke up in the morning without a hangover, we want the recipe for this rice wine stuff. It's quite difficult to do so we decided not to pursue. After Alan devoured about 70 Billion pancakes, off we went at around 9:30 up a big hill, then down a big hill. This happened a few times, and we were all done by 2:00 again. So we got back to Sapa town, walked around it, had a nap, had food, had a few beers, but it was pretty quiet so went to bed.

The next day we went down to the CatCat village, this was only a two hour walk. Saw a waterfall and got attacked by sandflies. I don't know how, but we managed to kill about 6 hours until the bus. Beer was involved of course, but not too much. So the bus arrived to take us to the train station and we get on...

And now the fun begins...
So the train leaves at 9 PM, and is supposed to arrive at 6 AM. However, a freight train ahead of us derails and we stop at about midnight, thinking nothing of it we go back to sleep. At 6AM we wake up and find out we still haven't moved. A word that starts with F and rhymes with duck came into our heads a few times. So we missed our flight by about 5 hours. So here we are in Hanoi, bored, hungry, in need of another Halida (this beer is the best in Vietnam in our educated opinion as we have tried every beer possible).
We got a flight for the next morning, so not too much time lost.
LAOS HERE WE COME!

Nha Trang is pretty much a seaside town, like the Mount but with a lot more hotels and Vietnamese people. We spent the first day wandering around and checking out the place. And then went down to the market as we always tend to do, just in case there is a bargain to be found. Then spent the late afternoon on the beach, such a hard life we lead. Then Grant was a loser and crashed out at 8 again.

The next day was awesome, we went on a boat trip out to the islands, the first stop was some snorkelling and we could see some fishes and some coral. Pretty cool. Then we got taken to another island and we ate a whole lot of food, and then the crew started playing music and stuff, which was pretty hilarious. The coolest thing on it was the floating bar, we were put in rescue tubes and swum around in them drinking red wine. Then we went to an island and hung out with some crazy Canadian dudes and then off to an aquarium. After such a hard day of having fun we had a nap, and up again two hours later for food and beer, which progressed on for a while longer than expected.

After the night before, we decided to sit on the beach. That lasted a while, then we jumped on a bus a few hours later to Hoi An.

Hoi An is an old town, lots of old Asian buildings. It looks like a really cool place, but we had a hotel that was complete arse so it put a bit of a dampener on it. There are millions (or so it seemed) of tailors here, but since we are not girls we didn't get loads of clothes made. But Alan bought some silk for his Mum. The first day was nothing to report, 2nd day about the same. We jumped on some rickety bikes and went to the beach 4 kms away, not that great compared to Nha Trang. We had an afternoon bus to catch to Hue anyway.

So we got to Hue after our shortest bus trip yet of 4 hours. As our luck is so great, about 3 kms from Hue, we got a flat tyre. Awesome. But we've found a good hotel (yussss!!!) and we even have our own computer to look up thai wives for Alan!
Today we went on a boat trip looking at some temples and tombs of ex Vietnamese emporers. They were pretty cool, but nothing compared to Angkor.

Got fed on the boat again, that was cool. And Day 13, we finally had rain... And it's not as hot anymore so we only sweat a little.
Grant has a cold so he's gonna be pulling a sicky tomorrow, Alan will do whatever he damn well wants, probably eat. All Day.

OK, that is all. Stay in school kids.

Our travelling hasn't been the best of late, after misguided Taxi Driver and the nice Road to Siem Reap, and well todays Travels werren't to be any different.
The Bus company had organised a Mini Bus to travel around Siem Reap and pickup the passengers, we were told to be ready outside our Guest House at 6:40am, but when we hadn't been picked up by 7am for our 7:30 bus we phoned the bus Company and asked what was up they told to wait and someone would be there shortly to pick us up. A guy on a Moto (small scooter type Motorbike) turned up a couple minutes later and organised a Couple other Moto drivers to give us a ride to Bus Station, so atleast we got to the bus on time.
About 2 hours into the Bus trip someone at the back of the bus noticed Smoke, so the bus stopped and found the problem. They had stacked peoples luggage on top of the Battery and some plastic had started to melt, thankfully not burn, but it still added about 30min's to our 6hour journey. the rest of the journey was pretty uneventful.

Phnom Penh was pretty boring, the highlight of the over night stop over was the 1 hour Foot Massage.

As we stayed in the guest house that organised our next bus ride, we managed to get there without any issues... Finally! This bus trip was surprisingly uneventful after all we had read about how bad the Vietnam border crossing was. I'd heard of waits of around 2 hours, but it was about 30-45 minutes all up! Brilliant!
We got to Ho Chi Minh City at around 3 PM and just wandered around the backpackers area and to a market (apparently Bill Clinton had Beef Noodle Soup there, wow). Then we had more food, we do like food after all. And more beer, if there is one thing we like more than food, it's beer. And finally got to bed at a normal hour... No more crashing out at 8 PM!!!!
Next day we went to the Cu Chi tunnels, these crazy Vietnamese people made 200 kms of tunnels with a bamboo basket and a hoe (not the North Shore kind, a short handled one). Sorry Sarj. It was really interesting, as they had the total opposite opinion about the Vietnam War to what we see in the movies. They're pretty passionate about it, but willing to forgive and forget. The Cu Chi people managed to fend off the Americans for pretty much the whole war, and lived in the tunnels for a long time as well. And they still tended to the crops in the afternoon, now that's dedication!
Alan couldn't quite fit into the secret holes that they jumped out of to shoot the 'Evil Americans'.

Next stop was the War Remnants museum, which was pretty eye opening. Seeing what Agent Orange, Napalm and Phosphorous bombs did to people makes the Americans look like they're the bad guys... Not the Vietnamese that we so often get the impression of in the movies. Wandered around the central city, it's pretty impressive see...

Actually, that's the royal palace, but the rest of the CBD is pretty flash. Lots of construction.

Now we're in Nha Trang after taking the overnight bus. Grant slept like a log, Alan kinda slept. Opposite to every other night so far!

Now we're waiting on our hotel room to be ready, then off for a walk and to book our trip around the islands tomorrow. Swimming and Snorkelling sounds pretty good about now. So how's work been everyone???? Muahahaha I'm so evil...

Ka kite, Stay Wicked ass good.
Grant and Alan

We spent the next couple days looking around (Climatising) Bangkok and organising a Visa for Vietnam. This elephant was just outside the restaurant we were at!

03/04/2007 - The Journey to Siem Reap, Cambodia, and what a journey it was. To start with we had to be up at 5am to get a taxi to the Bus Station for a 6am Bus. The Taxi Driver obviously misunderstood and took us to the airport, so we missed the 6am Bus and had to take the 7am bus. After a 4 Hour bus ride to Aranyaprathet and a Tuk Tuk ride to the border we were ready to go, but that was all to be the easy part of the journey. After about 1 hour at the border sorting out our Visa'a we shared a Taxi (Toyota Camry) with 2 other Tourists to Siem Reap, 155km away. The trip took us about 3 1/2 hours, the Road Is Terrible dirt road for probably 90% of the way and just in a terrible condition.

04/05/07 - Angkor Temples, Beautiful Place and a must see for all Cambodian Tourists, we got up for sunrise, sadly cloud in the way, stayed at the temples till sunset and again cloud in the way, but still a Great day.

More to come tommorow.
